One of the most common questions I get from clients before their session is: What should we wear? Whether you're planning a couples session to celebrate your love, or a family session to freeze this season of life in time, choosing the right outfits can truly elevate your photos and your confidence in front of the camera.
The good news? You don't need to stress or go buy a whole new wardrobe. With a few simple tips, you can create a look that feels like you timeless, comfortable, and perfectly suited to your session.
1. Start with a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, think in terms of coordinating tones. Choose 2-3 core colors and build around them using neutrals, earthy tones, or soft muted hues.
- For couples: Think complementary tones like olive green and cream, burnt orange and denim, or dusty blue and tan.
- For families: Start with one person's outfit (usually moms), and build from there using similar tones, textures, and layers.
Avoid super bright neon colors, logos, or loud patterns they can distract from your faces and the connection in your photos.
2. Dress for the Season and the Setting
Michigan weather has a personality of its own, so dressing with the season in mind is key. The location and time of year should influence your clothing choices.
- Fall: Layer with cardigans, scarves, or boots. Rich, warm tones like mustard, rust, and forest green photograph beautifully.
- Winter: Cozy textures, knits, corduroy, boots, and jewel-toned palettes.
- Spring: Flowy dresses, soft florals, and pastel colors.
- Summer: Breathable fabrics, rolled sleeves, and light tones like cream, blush, and sage.
3. Texture + Layers = Visual Interest
Photos love texture! Think of materials like linen, denim, lace, cotton, or knits.
- A chunky knit cardigan, felt hat, or layered necklace can add the right touch.
- For families, layers are functional for Michigan temperatures, better to peel off than wish you had more!
4. Dress Up Just a Little
Dressing a step above your everyday look gives the session a special feel.
- Women: Midi or maxi dresses, flowy pants, or jumpsuits.
- Men: Well-fitted pants and a button-down or henley shirt.
- Kids: Simple, cute outfits like rompers or overalls. Soft tones. Avoid characters/logos. Anything stiff or itchy.
5. Comfort = Confidence
You should feel good in what you're wearing. When you're comfortable, you relax, and that's what translates into natural, beautiful photos. Especially, if you have little ones and we are walking around a bit.
- Choose clothes that fit well and move with you.
- Bring a backup option.
- For couples: Think about what you would wear on a date night that makes you feel amazing but still allows you to be yourself.
6. Mind the Details
- Iron or steam your clothes.
- Coordinate shoes with your outfit.
- Leave phones, hair ties, or smartwatches out of pockets.
Hair and makeup matter too, nothing drastic is required, but a little touch-up helps you feel photo ready.
7. Let Personality Shine
The ultimate goal is to feel like yourself just a slightly elevated version. I want your session reflect you! If you want to include your fur babies, wear boots, a hat, or rock your favorite jacket, go for it! These photos are for your memories, so don't be afraid to add personality in subtle, intentional ways!
